ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have appealed to the people to join the government in observing the Earth Hour by voluntarily switching off lights in their homes from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday.

In a message on Friday, Mr Zardari said conservation of natural resources was crucial to creating a sustainable environment.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two Jamiat-i-uIema-i-Islam workers were killed and 11 others were injured in a grenade attack targeting a JUI party office in Dera Ismail Khan.

Unknown assailants hurled two grenades at JUI-F’s election office near Kashmir Chowk.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital where they received treatment for minor injuries.

Two workers succumed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Following the attack the Election Commission of Pakistan directed law enforcement agencies to take strict security measures ahead of the PP-85 constituency by-elections. – DawnNews

QUETTA: Two people were killed in an incident of target killing in Panjgoor town of Balochistan on Tuesday.

Police said that the assailants on motorcycles opened fire on the two persons near Grid Station area of Panjgoor. One person was killed on the spot while the other succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Both the victims were identified as labourers. Police officials have started investigation into the incident.

Incidents of target killings in the province have increased in the past few weeks. A renowned educationist Professor Fazal Bari was gunned down in Quetta on Monday, while several others have also been killed in fatal attacks recently.

QUETTA: Renowned educationist Professor Fazal Bari was gunned down here on Monday and the Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack.

Professor Bari, Principal of the Tamir-i-Nau Public Model school and a former chairman of the Balochistan Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, was going to the school when the gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at his car near Bhosa Mandi, killing him on the spot and injuring his driver Abdul Sattar.

The Tamir-i-Nu-Public college and its affiliated schools announced a three-day closure to mourn the death of the widely respected educationist.

The killing triggered protests by students who first reached the civil hospital after hearing the news of the murder and later marched on various roads, chanting slogans against the government for its failure to stop the target killings in the province.

They later went to the Governor’s House and Chief Minister’s House where they held a demonstration and demanded immediate arrest of the killers.

QUETTA: Gunmen riding a motorcycle Monday shot dead a college principal and renowned educationist in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s restive southwestern province of Baluchistan, police said.

Fazle Bari, principal of private boys’ college Tameer-e-Nau, was killed in the drive-by shooting when he was travelling to work in his car, senior police official Tariq Manzoor told AFP.

“Bari died on the spot and his driver was wounded,” Manzoor said, linking the attack to a recent wave of unrest and “targeted killings.”

Some 250 students blocked a main road during a march towards the residence of the Baluchistan governor to protest against the killing, prompting police to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd, an AFP reporter said.

In Quetta and other parts of Balochistan, 18 people, including three police personnel, have been victims of target killings and bomb attacks over the past five days.
