PENANG, Nov 20 (Bernama) — Almost half of the island of Penang was hit by a power failure for about an hour this afternoon, caused by a trip at the main feeder substation in Juru on the mainland.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur tonight that the blackout occurred in Georgetown, Farlim, Sungai Pinang, Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau at 3.17pm. Power was restored at 4.24pm.
A check by Bernama found many traders at several shopping malls in Georgetown continuing with their business in candle light. Several others closed their business for fear of losing their goods to looters.
A large number of civil servants working at Menara Komtar gathered at the grounds of the building and firemen rushed there to ensure no one was trapped in the lifts.
The state assembly session was postponed to tomorrow morning following the power outage. The blackout hit during a heated debate on the Penang Global City Center (PGCC) between Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Opposition Leader Phee boon Poh (DAP-Sungai Puyu).
