IPOH: Malaysia continued their winning run in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament with a 4-1 win over Egypt at the Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.

It was the second win for Malaysia after a 3-2 success over Pakistan the previous day. Egypt also came into the match buoyed by a surprise 2-2 draw with India.

Malaysia dominated the first half but were only rewarded with a 27th minute field goal by forward Ismail Abu.

Two consecutive penalty corners four minutes into the second half brought Malaysia their second goal. The first attempt from Mohamed Amin Rahim, who took a flick, hit the leg of an Egyptian defender. And off the second corner, Engku Abdul Malek beat goalkeeper Mohamed Mabrouk with a direct hit.

IPOH: Japan and South Korea stand in Malaysia’s way in preliminary round matches of the Asia Cup tournament, which will be held in Kuantan from May 9-16.

In the draw released yesterday, Malaysia have been drawn in Group A, which also has Oman. The teams in Group B are India, Pakistan, China and Bangladesh.

The tournament features eight teams following the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) decision to reject the Asian Hockey Federation’s proposal to promote the third and fourth-placed teams from the AHF Cup together with champions Bangladesh and runners-up Oman.

The top two teams in the groups will qualify for the crossover semi-finals. The champions gain an automatic berth to the 2010 World Cup Finals in New Delhi and the next four teams will go into qualifying tournaments, tentatively set to be held in November in three venues, Lille (France) and Auckland (New Zealand) and Dubai (UAE).

Dubai: The 2009 Asia Cup men’s hockey tournament, scheduled to be held in Dubai in May, has been moved to Malaysia.

The UAE Hockey Committee had beaten strong contenders like India, Malaysia, Pakistan and Bangladesh to win the rights to host the event during the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) meeting held in Hyderabad last year. The Asia Cup was scheduled to be staged at the new stadium at the Dubai Sports City.

“We have opted out of staging the Asia Cup due to financial reasons. If we staged the event during this period, we would not have made any profit,” remarked Khalid Esmail, vice president of the UAE Hockey Committee.

Adam Barnes, the manager of the World Hockey Academy at the Dubai Spots City said that the hockey stadium would have been ready for event.

IPOH: Malaysia pulled off a major upset when they beat Pakistan 3-2 in their opening match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament at the Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.

The Malaysians led from the start and only some erratic defending in the later stages of the match allowed the Pakistanis to narrow the deficit.

The result gave Tai Beng Hai a perfect start in his first international match as coach of the national senior team.

Malaysia’s last win over Pakistan was in the 2002 Busan Asian Games when they won the bronze medal on penalties. Prior to that, an outright win was achieved in 1986 at the Seoul Asian Games with a 2-1 scoreline.
