IPOH: Japan and South Korea stand in Malaysia’s way in preliminary round matches of the Asia Cup tournament, which will be held in Kuantan from May 9-16.
In the draw released yesterday, Malaysia have been drawn in Group A, which also has Oman. The teams in Group B are India, Pakistan, China and Bangladesh.
The tournament features eight teams following the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) decision to reject the Asian Hockey Federation’s proposal to promote the third and fourth-placed teams from the AHF Cup together with champions Bangladesh and runners-up Oman.
The top two teams in the groups will qualify for the crossover semi-finals. The champions gain an automatic berth to the 2010 World Cup Finals in New Delhi and the next four teams will go into qualifying tournaments, tentatively set to be held in November in three venues, Lille (France) and Auckland (New Zealand) and Dubai (UAE).
The MHF secretary, Hashim Mohamed Yusof, said that the AHF had approved the draw and they were waiting for the FIH to ratify the fixtures.
Malaysia had Japan for company in the Olympic qualifiers last year but lost to them in the battle for a place in the final. Germany beat Japan to take the spot to the Beijing Games.
