IPOH: Malaysia pulled off a major upset when they beat Pakistan 3-2 in their opening match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament at the Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.
The Malaysians led from the start and only some erratic defending in the later stages of the match allowed the Pakistanis to narrow the deficit.
The result gave Tai Beng Hai a perfect start in his first international match as coach of the national senior team.
Malaysia’s last win over Pakistan was in the 2002 Busan Asian Games when they won the bronze medal on penalties. Prior to that, an outright win was achieved in 1986 at the Seoul Asian Games with a 2-1 scoreline.

Yesterday’s win was hard fought as the Malaysians were forced into heavy defending in the second half as the Pakistanis worked overtime to get the goals. But goalkeeper S. Kumar was in his element as he saved no fewer than six clear shots at goal.
Beng Hai said that they played the right strategy to win the match.
“In matches like this, it is important that we make use of the chances. It is a good start and we need to play more like this more to keep the winning feeling,” he said.
Malaysia started off aggressively and took the lead in the eighth minute after earning their first penalty corner. And Mohamed Amin Rahim’s flick had goalkeeper Nasir Ahmad well beaten.
But Pakistan hit back two minutes later through Shakeel Abbasi. From then on, play swung from end to end and midfielder Mohamed Shahrun Nabil regained the lead for Malaysia when he scored off a goalmouth melee in the 29th minute.
Pakistan came back strongly in the second half and earned two penalty corners in the 38th and 43rd minutes, which they failed to convert.
In the 48th minute, Malaysia scored their third goal when Azlan Misron scored from their third penalty corner of the match.
Malaysia then defended stoutly but were unable to prevent Abbas Haider from narrowing the deficit in the 68th minute.
In an earlier match, Egypt scored a last-gasp goal to earn a 2-2 draw with India.
The Egyptians took the lead in the eighth minute through Mohamed Hassan and Amr El Saied snatched the equaliser in the 70th minute off a penalty corner rebound. The Indians scored their goals through skipper Sandeep Singh (14th) and Shivender Singh (50th).
For Egypt, it was the first time that they did not lose to India and coach Jerzy Wybieralski said: “I think everyone is as surprised as we are over the result.
“Nobody expected it and we have showed that we can play well. Sure there was a little luck in the draw but you need it in big matches.”
