Banjir besar kali ini diberi nama Banjir Sindh 2011 kerana hanya berlaku di kawasan Sindh, bermula di Bandi sehingga ke Mirpur Khas.

Keadaaan yang sungguh kelam kabut dengan tangisan kanak-kanak, suara sanak-saudara yang telah mengecam mayat mangsa. Wartawan Siaran Express247 tidak putus-putus membawakan laporan rasmi dan terkini dari tempat kejadian. Suasana hiruk pikuk sekali. Karachi bergolak lagi. Setahu penulis, kali terakhir Karachi bergolak dek kerana pengebom berani mati ialah pada November 2010 di mana pengebom berani mati telah merempuh Balai Polis di Karachi. Letupan yang maha dahsyat kedengaran dan menyebabkan tingkap dan kaca pecah sehingga 5km jauhnya. Begitu hebat bom ciptaan manusia kini.

Setakat ini telah dilaporkan 8 orang telah mati termasuk pengawal keselamatan di rumah Pegawai SSD CID tersebut. Turut terkorban ialah seorang cikgu perempuan dengan anaknya yang dalam perjalanan ke sekolah pagi tadi. Kejadian sadis dan tragis sebegini memang menyedihkan. Bagaimana ianya boleh berlaku di dalam sebuah negara Islam yang mempunyai penduduk seramai 180 juta ini? tiada siapa ada jawapannya. Jika anda berani, saksikanlah gambar-gambar di tempat kejadian, kawah juga terbentuk dek kerana kuatnya letupan yang dihasilkan pagi tadi.

Belum pun reda kejadian tembak rambang (target killing) di Karachi dan kejadian banjir di Wilayah Sindh, kita dikejutkan pula dengan kejadian pengeboman yang besar sebegini. Beginilah kehidupan di Pakistan. Acapakali bila penulis terdengar, terbaca atau terlihat akan berita-berita pengeboman seperti ini, penulis akan memeriksa berapa ramai yang terkorban. Jika ramai, kita kena selidik modus operandi mereka dan perlu mengambil tahu serba sedikit kawasan kejadian.

Belum pun reda kes pengeboman di Karachi, Pakistan bergegar lagi. Baru sebentar penulis menyaksikan berita terkini di Express247. Peshawar pula bergegar. Kali ini pengebom berani mati mengebom Pasar CD (CD Market) di tengah-tengah Peshawar. Bom dipercayai digunakan di atas motor sahaja! Setakat ini 4 orang telah dikenalpasti terbunuh. Pastikan akan ramai lagi akan terbunuh setelah mangsa-mangsa yang cedera parah dibawa ke hospital.

Dua pengeboman oleh pengebom berani mati dalam masa 1 hari! Sungguh melampau rasanya. Penulis sendiri tidak tahu bilakah kes-kes pengeboman sebegini akan berakhir. Ayat-ayat seperti the world will be safer after Bin Laden’s death nampaknya tidak benar sama sekali. Keadaaan semakin teruk nampaknya. Penulis rasanya dunia di sini semakin tidak selamat. Siapa tahu mungkin esok lusa pengebom berani mati akan meletupkan diri mereka di Islamabad pula.

Jika tahun lepas bandar bersejarah Lahore paling teruk dibom dan bergegar sepanjang tahun, kali ini giliran Karachi pula. Makin banyak pula kes-kes jenayah di Karachi. Bandar Peshawar tidak perlu dipersoalkan lagi. Penulis akan berasa hairan sekiranya dalam seminggu atau sebulan tiada letupan yang berlaku di Peshawar. Peshawar dan letupan begitu sinonim semenjak penulis tiba di bumi ajnabi ini pada penghujung tahun 2009 lagi.

Kepada semua rakyat Malaysia di Pakistan, samada di Abbottabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad mahupun di mana jua anda berada di bumi ajnabi ini, harap-harap lebih berhati-hati selepas ini. Silap langkah buruk padahnya. Kehidupan di bumi Pakistan ini menuntut kita untuk tidak berada di tempat yang salah, pada masa yang salah dan dengan manusia yang salah pada bila-bila masa. Nyawa di sini bagaikan tidak bernilai lagi.

Keratan akhbar online di atas menunjukkan pasukan polis menanggal jaket pengebom berani mati ke-tiga di Makam di Dera Ghazi Khan. Pasti ramai lagi nyawa yang melayang sekiranya pengebom berani mati ini berjaya meletupkan diri bersama-sama rakyat Pakistan yang berpusu-pusu menghadiri upacara memperingati ahli sufi di makam di Dera Ghazi Khan malam tadi.

Setiap tahun ramai rakyat Pakistan yang mengunjungi Makam beliau bagi memperingati hari kematian beliau. Hari peringatan Ahli Sufi di Pakistan juga dikenali sebagai Urs Day. Pada hari tersebut, anda akan dapat lihat rakyat Pakistan berbondong-bondong mengunjungi makam-makam seperti ini. Terdapat tiga makam yang amat popular di Karachi dan Lahore, juga Islamabad. Makam Data Darbar di Lahore (telah diserang tahun lepas, oleh pengebom berani mati berkembar) dan juga Makam Abdullah Shah Ghazi di Karachi (telah juga diserang tahun lepas).

Selama saya menetap di Islamabad, Pakistan lebih kurang setahun yang lalu, telah berkali-kali berita akan serangan ke atas makam-makam ini direkodkan di skrin TV tempatan. Kebiasaannya saya ambil tidak peduli sahaja akan berita-berita sebegini. Saya hanya akan ambil kisah sekiranya serangan yang dilakukan adalah besar dan melibatkan lebih daripada 20 kematian. Kejadian-kejadian besar sebegini biasanya akan mendapat liputan luas di stesen TV tempatan. Selama beberapa jam anda akan dapat saksikan klip-klip video yang dimainkan berulang-ulang kali berkenaan serangan pengebom berani mati tersebut.

Nyawa manusia kelihatan seperti amat murah di sini. Kematian yang sebegitu banyak agaknya sudah menjadi lumrah di negara yang berpenduduk seramai lebih kurang 180 juta orang ini. Mungkin dek kerana terlampau ramai manusia dak rakyat, mereka seaakan-akan tidak kisah dengan perkara-perkara sebegini lagi. Kadang-kadang saya terfikir, mungkin juga keamanan telah lama lenyap di bumi ajnabi ini. Mungkin juga mereka tidak pernah mengecap keamanan sebenar, bebas ke mana-mana tanpa perli risau akan pengebom berani mati.

Acapkali telah saya tulis sebelum ini, kehidupan di bumi ini memerlukan kita untuk senantiasa berwaspada, lidah kena sentiasa basah dan  hati kerana sentiasa berjaga-jaga. Banyak perkara yang memerlukan gerak hati. Saya lebih percaya kepada gerak hari daripada gerak manusia di sini. Kadang-kadang bila kita rasa tidak selamat, hati kita akan cuba memberontak dan beredar dari sana. Pengalaman bersolat jumaat di dalam ketakutan di masjid-masjid di sini memang akan jadi satu kenangan yang menyeramkan buat saya. Kita tidak dapat menjangka bilakah ianya akan berlaku. Saya hanya dapat berdoa dan bertawakkal sahaja. Langkah-langkah keselematan diambil dan diperhalusi sepanjang masa.

Bukan mudah untuk hidup di sini. Hanya mereka yang pernah menghuni bumi Pakistan sahaja akan tahu akan apa yang saya perkatakan. Ada juga sahabat-sahabat saya di Malaysia yang bertanya “Nizam, all the bomb threats, suicide bombers, target killing. Is it for real?” Saya kadang-kadang hanya tersenyum. Walaubagaimana sekalipun penerangan yang saya beri, ianya tidak dapat sama dengan pengalaman yang saya sendiri lalui. Tiada kata-kata yang dapat diungkap akan rasa takutnya kami di sini. Hanya Allah yang mengetahuinya sahaja.

Pernah juga beberapa kali saya mengajak rakan-rakan di Malaysia untuk mengunjungi Islamabad. Pelbagai alasan diutarakan dan semestinya salah satu alasan paling terkenal ialah “Selamat ke di sana, bagaimana kalau ada bom nanti?”. Dan kebiasannya saya akan menjawab dengan berseloroh “Kalau tidak selamat, masakan saya masih boleh balik ke Malaysia bertemu dengan anda padi hari ini ya”. Kadang-kadang saya katakan kepada mereka “Jika anda singgah ke Islamabad, dan anda rasa tidak selesa menginap di hotel, and boleh tidur di rumah saya. Jangan bimbang, jika ada apa-apa berlaku, saya akan cuba melindungi anda seberapa upaya.“

Ramai juga yang memberikan komen dan bercita-cita untuk datang ke Pakistan setelah melihat foto-foto dan catatan perjalanan saya melalui blog ini. Ramai yang teruja dengan keindahan dan keunikan yang tergambar di dalam blog ini. Seringkali mereka bertanya bagaimana saya boleh hidup dan masih boleh berjalan-jalan di sini sekiranya kehidupan saya diselimuti rasa takut sepanjang masa. Rakan-rakanku sekalian, hidup perlu diteruskan. Catatan perjalanan yang saya persembahkan di sini hanya sekelumit sahaja daripada catatan sebenar. Ada perlukan sedikit keberanian untuk berjalan-jalan di sini. Jika saya katakan yang ianya seperti bertarung nyawa hendak ke Tasik Saif-ul Muluk di Lembah Kaghan, pasti anda tidak percaya bukan? Jika anda ingin merasa apa yang saya lalui, anda perlu datang ke sini.

Tujuan saya berjalan-jalan sepanjang hujung minggu adalah untuk mengisi masa senggang yang saya ada. Jika diikutkan hati memang saya tidak berani untuk pergi ke mana-mana. Saya pernah fobia untuk berkunjung ke Jinnah Super tatkala rumah saya bergegar dek kerana letupan bom tangan 300 meter di rumah saya. Namun bila difikirkan kembali, sampai bila saya hanya mampu berkurung di dalam rumah sahaja. Saya perlu keluar melihat dunia. Terus terang saya katakan, saya boleh menulis berkenaan situasi kehidupan sebenar kami rakyat Malaysia di sini, dan saya pernah menulis mengenainya sebelum ini. Blog ini akan jadi begitu sedih dengan catatan-catatan kematian sahaja nanti. Saya ingin berkongsi pengalaman saya bekerja dan menghuni di bumi Islamabad, itu sahaja. Semoga pengalaman yang baik dijadikan tauladan dan mana-mana catatan yang tidak baik dijadikan sempadan.

Begitulah kehidupan kami di sini, warga Malaysia di Islamabad khasnya dan di Pakistan amnya. Serangan di Makam Ahli Sufi fi Dera Ghazi Khan malam tadi bukanlah yang pertama saya dengari, dan mungkin juga bukan yang terakhir. Doakan keselamatan kami di sini ya

tapi seriously aku memang rasa nak tengok sangat filem ni sebab filem2 ni ala2 sejarah kisah benar. pasti menarik menyaksikan kisah benazir bhutto daripada kacamata seorang pengarah filem nanti kan. aku takde masa benazir dibunuh di rawalpindi. dengar ceritanya sungguh huru-hara ketika itu. kawasan sind province paling bergolak ketika benazir dibunuh. bekas suaminya kini adalah presiden pakistan ketika ini.

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer was attacked and killed in a firing incident in Islamabad’s Kohsar market on Tuesday.

The late governor was shot in Kohsar Market by one of his security guards, an elite force personnel, who has been identified as Malik Mumtaz Hussain.

A spokesperson of the Polyclinic Hospital confirmed that the governor had been hit by 25 bullets, while witnesses at the site said that he had died on the spot.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik revealed that the arrested man had admitted to the murder and ruled out inadequate security as a possible cause of the attack.

The federal government has announced a three day mourning period.

The funeral will be held at the Governor’s House tomorrow (Wednesday).

President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly condemned the assassination of Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer today and directed the Interior Minister Rehman Malik to personally supervise the investigations and report to him urgently.

Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that President was informed about the tragic assassination during a meeting of the PPP MPAs of four districts in the Bilawal House after which all the meetings scheduled for today were postponed to a later date.

The President also directed the Party leadership that the birthday functions in connection with Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 83rd birth anniversary on Wednesday be limited only to holding of seminars at district, divisional and provincial levels without fanfare and without cake cutting ceremonies. Quran Khwani for Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Salmaan Taseer will also be held on Wednesday as part of the birth anniversary functions of Party’s founding Chairman, he said.

The President also asked the Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and MNA Faryal Talpur to participate in the funeral on his behalf. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will also participate in the funeral.

ISLAMABAD: A moderate earthquake of 5.7 magnitude jolted northwest Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan on Thursday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, an official said.

Tremors were felt in several cities in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its capital Peshawar as well as in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, meteorological department chief Arif Mehmood told AFP.

The quake struck at 08:59 am local time with a magnitude of 5.7 and its epicentre was located 280 kilometres northwest of Peshawar near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, he said.

“No loss of life or damage to property has been immediately reported,” he said.

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in October 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people, mainly in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. —AFP

ISLAMABAD: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad and the northwest region of the country early on Monday, triggering panic among people.

The earthquake took place at about 2:45 am local time but there were no reports of casualties.

Arif Mahmood, Director General of the Meteorological Department said the quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and the epicenter of the earthquake was located near Hazara at a depth of 10 km.

Tremors were felt in the northern and upper regions of the country, including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Muzaffarabad, Rawal Kot, Taxila, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar and Hazara Division. —DawnNews

selang sejam daripada kejadian di karachi, timbul pula episod pengebom berani mati di lahore. pengikut syiah yang sedang berarak untuk upacara yaoum-e-ali di sana telah dikejutkan dengan 3 siri letupan pengebom berani mati. peristiwa sedih sebelum berbuka puasa ini berlaku di karbala gamay shah & bhati chowk lahore. saya belum pernah mendengar tempat ini lagi sebelumnya. lebih 20 orang telah mati malam tadi. suasana agak hingar bingat di kawasan perarakan tersebut. saya yakin akan ramai lagi mangsa cedera yang akan meninggal dunia. 3 siri letupan melibat IED iaitu improvised explosive device. kepala dua pengebom berani mati telah ditemui di tempat kejadian.

saya menikmati iftar berseorangan di rumah di islamabad sambil mata tidak pejam memerhatikan skrin tv yang acapkali membawakan siaran secara langsung dari karachi dan lahore. sudah banyak kali saya ke lahore dan sudah banyak kali juga saya mengalami situasi yang melibatkan gerak hati di sana. acapkali saya terselemat daripada siri pengeboman di sana, kuasa Allah menentukan segalanya kan.

selepas selesai solat maghrib saya bergegas ke masjid faisal, masjid terbesar di pakistan. masjid ini boleh memuatkan jemaah seramai 100,000 orang pada satu-satu masa. memang ramai bukan?

sayay masuk ke ruang solat utama. terdapat kain rentang yang dibina di dalam ruang solat utama. semuanya berwarna putih. terdapat begitu ramai manusia di masjid kali ini. mungkin inilah impak pada malam-malam terakhir di sini. ramai yang ingin bermalam di dalam ruang solat utama. saya perhatikan ramai yang memakai tag nama. saya cuma menjengah untuk mengetahui apa yang ditulis di tag nama mereka. namun gagal.

suasana pada malam itu sungguh kelam. ramai yang berbual-bual di luar masjid. tetiba azan berkumandang tanda sudah masuk waktu isya’ di islamabad. saya bangun untuk menunaikan solat sunat. keadaaan hawa yang agak panas memungkinkan saya untuk bersolat sunat betul-betul di sebelah kipas angin besar. di dalam ruang solat utama memang banyak kipas angin besar yang terpasang. saya kurang pasti mengapa pihak masjid tidak memasang aircond malam tadi. hawa yang panas menyebab saya berlengas semasa solat sunat

selesai solat sunat iqamah dilaungkan. kesemua jemaah telah siap sedia untuk solat isya’. saya rasa begitu tidak selesa. mungkin juga kerana hawa yang panas. mungkin juga kerana bau yang kurang menyenangkan di dalam masjid ini. mengapakah badan-badan mereka berbau sebegini? bukankah kebersihan itu separuh daripada iman, dan kita digalakkan untuk berwangi-wangian, agar tidak mengganggu jemaah yang lain dengan bau kita?

selesai sahaja sola isya, saya berdoa sebentar bersama-sama imam dan sementara menunggu solat terawih saya sempat solat sunat seketika. ramai sungguh manusia pada malam ini. biasanya kalau solat terawih hanya dalam 4-5 saf sahaja. namun pada malam ini lebih separuh masjid penuh dengan jemaah. saya mula rasa bimbang. bimbang sekiranya apa-apa berlaku di dalam keadaan jemaah yang ramai. saya berkira-kira untuk angkat kaki sahaja. namun saya perhatikan keadaaan sekeliling dahulu.

sebelum terawih akan diadakan sedikit bayan atau tazkirah dalam 15 minit begitu. saya tunggu tazkirah tersebut berakhir. namun hati saya masih lagi tidak tenteram. mana mungkin saya boleh fokus kepada solat saya jika hati saya meronta-ronta sebegitu. saya perhatikan tidak terdapat seorang pun bukan warga pakistan kali ni. ini lebih merungsingkan saya. menyesal pula datang ke masjid faisal malam ini. tiba-tiba imej pengeboman di lahore dan karachi menerjah ke dalam kotak fikiran saya

bagaimana jika ada pengebom berani mati di dalam ruang solat utama ini?

setiap seorang jemaah yang ingin memasuki ruang solat utama memang diperiksa oleh anggota keselamatan di pintu masuk solat utama. namun ini tidak semestinya berkesan. acapkali saya tengok dan lihat pengebom berani mati lolos jua ke dalam masjid, terutamanya di lahore dan karachi. aduh! susah sebenarnya kehidupan di bumi asing islamabad ini. hendak sembahyang pun masih perlu berkira-kira akan faktor keselamatan dan kesiagaan.

imej pengeboman yang masih segar sebelum iftar tadi sungguh tertanam di dalam benak fikiran saya. saya perlu lakukan sesuatu. mungkin inilah masanya untuk saya beredar keluar masjid menurut gerak hati saya. akhirnya saya sms kepada pemandu yang saya ingin pulang ketika itu juga. saya bergegas keluar dari ruang solat utama. dan segera mengambil crocs kelabu di rak kasut. saya terus ke kawasan tempat letak kereta. saya ingin pulang ke rumah. hati saya agak gusar malam tadi sebenarnya.

begitulah kehidupan di sini. kadang-kadang kita kena berani. dan kadang-kadang kita kena ikut gerak hati

bagi saya biarlah saya keluar dari masjid tadi.saya menunaikan solat terawih di rumah sahaja

jika ada bom pasti saya akan selamat, jika tiada bom sekalipun saya akan selamat juga, insyaAllah

kehidupan harus diteruskan, walau apa jua rintangan yang dihadapi sekali pun.

kejadian tersebut amat menyedihkan semua warga islamabad, warga pakistan dan warga dunia amnya. pesawat malang airblue yang membawa 152 orang penumpang terhempas ke bukit margalla di pagi 28 julai 2010 tatkala cuaca hujan renyai2 dan berkabus di islamabad.

aku cuba nak mencatatkan sesuatu pada pagi rabu kejadian, namun terasa teramat terkejut, sedih dan tak mampu nak menaip pada masa tersebut. sekarang dah ada kekuataan sedikit. harus rasaya aku coretkan pengalaman aku menyaksikan sendiri dan mendengar pesawat malang itu melanggar bukit margalla pada pagi tersebut.

pada pagi rabu tersebut aku sampai awal ke pejabat. memang selalunya aku sampai awal pun. waktu bekerja adalah pada jam 9 pagi dan kebiasannya aku akan sampai 1/2 jam daripada biasa. pagi tersebut aku sampai pada 8.30 pagi. macam biasa setelah pemanduku meninggalkan aku di kaki lima bangunan razia sharif plaza, aku akan menapak ke lif utama. sempat juga aku menoleh ke langit yang mendung. hujan masih lagi renyai-renyai tatkala aku melangkah. titisan air hujan membasahi baju dan beg laptopku.

cuaca pagi tersebut memang kelam dan kelabu. tidak aku sangkakan yang pagi tersebut akan mengundang tragedi penerbangan paling dahsyat dalam sejarah penerbangan di pakistan. hidup di bumi asing islamabad memang berwarna warni. tidak cukup dengan kejadian bom dan bencana alam, aku dikejutkan dengan berita kapalterbang terhempas pagi tersebut

aku melangkah ke pejabat macam biasa. jam sudah menunjukkan pada pukul 8.50 pagi. pekerja ku macam biasa menyediakan teh hijau dengan elaichi dan madu. memang menjadi kebiasaan di islamabad anda akan dihidangkan teh hijau dengan elaichi, bahan masakan utama di dalam nasi briyani. aku meneguk teh panas sambil menelek skrin komputer riba. beberapa email di balas dan di baca pada pagi tersebut.

tepat pada jam 9 pagi aku memanggil salah seorang anak buahku untuk berbincang masalah kerja. kami akan ke lahore untuk urusan rasmi esoknya (khamis) dan beberapa dokumen penting perlu disediakan pagi tersebut. perbincangan adakalanya serius dan ada kalanya agak santai. ketika perbincangan berjalan, kami terdengat bunyi pesawat melalui ruang udara pejabat kami. dek kerana sudah biasa dengan bunyi pesawat dan helikopter berlegar-legar di atas pejabat, aku buat tak endah sahaja pada pagi tersebut. tidak pernah terlintas di hatiku yang melintas itu adalah pesawat komersil. kalau pesawat tentera memang sudah biasa berlegar-legar di atas tu.

kebiasannya juga aku akan membuka blind di belakang kerusiku untuk aku melihat pemandangan bukit margalla yang indah. namun pada pagi tersebut aku tutup blind tersebut. tiada pemandangan bukit margalla pada pagi tersebut. jika ditakdirkan aku membuka blind tersebut, nescaya anak buahku akan dapat menyaksikan pesawat malang tersebut menembusi kabus tebal di bukit margalla secara live di depan mata. namun blind tersebut ditutup pada pagi tersebut.

selang beberapa minit, pejabatku kecoh dengan peristiwa pesawat menuju ke bukit margalla dan terhempas di sana. aku segera membuka blind dan tercari-cari lokasi sebenar pesawat malang tersebut. namun gagal. hanya kabus tebal sahaja yang menutupi bukit margalla. namun dengan kuasa Allah, secara tiba-tiba kabus tebal tadi sedikit demi sedikit naik ke atas dan terjelmalah kehijauan bukit margalla di depan mata.

kabus yang bercampur dengan asap menyukarkan kami untuk meneliti dan mempastikan lokasi kejadian malang tersebut. namun tuhan maha kuasa. setelah kabus hilang kami nampak asap berkepul-kepul di depan mata. sahlah itulah tempat kejadian pesawat malan itu terhempas. selang beberapa minit kemudian terdengar bunyi helikopter tentera menuju ke aras tempat kejadian. dua helikopter menyusul ke tempat kejadian. mata aku masih tidak berkelip menyaksikan asap di bukit margalla. macam tidak percaya yang pesawat airblue baru sahaja terhempas di depan mata aku.

suasana masih lagi hujan renyai-renyai dan berkabus sedikit. ketika ini berita tentang pesawat terhempas itu telah memenuhi ruang lingkup internet dan channel news 24/7 telah berkali-kali menayangkan akan berita terkini atau breaking news ini. suasana di pejabat telah hingar bingar. masing-masing agak terkejut dengan berita tragis di pagi tersebut. cepat-cepat aku memberitahu kepada semua anak buahku di pejabat untuk mempastikan tiada kenalan atau keluarga mereka yang terlibat.

pesawar airbus airblue tersebut dalam perjalanan dari turki ke islamabad melalui karachi. dengan 152 penumpang dan anak kapal, pesawat malang tersebut telah merempuh kaki bukit margalla dan terhempas. mata kami tidak berkelip menyaksikan channel express 24/7 menayangkan tempat kejadian yang kelihatan hitam dan hanya kelihatan bangkai-bangkai pesawat sahaja.

bukit margalla ada kawasan bukit (bukan gunung) yang dipenuhi dengan pokok-pokok renek dan tidak tinggi. di bukit margalla terdapat daman-e-koh dan pir-sohawa. dua tempat yang terkenal di islamabad. aku juga telah berkali menjengah ke kedua-dua tempat ini. mana mungkin aku dapat lupakan kejadian malang ini kerana ianya betul-betul dekat dengan kami di islamabad.

di daman-e koh anda dapat melihat pemandangan seluruh islamabad. ketika anda memandu untuk ke daman-e koh, pastinya akan melalui jalanraya ke aras bukit dan pastinya akan dapat melihat kawasang tragedi pesawat malang tersebut. atas sedikit daripada daman-e koh adalah pir sohawa. kawasan yang terkenal dengan restauran monal. seringkali juga aku makan-makan di sana. roti naan cheese nya agak sedap. chicken tikka juga fresh dan paling tidak dapat dilupakan ialan chicken karahi yang lazat di sana. oh pir sohawa!

kini bukit margalla amat terkenal di seluruh dunia, bukan sahaja kerana terdapatnya daman-e koh dan pir sohawa. tetapi juga kerana kejadian pesawat airbus airblue malang yang terhempas di sana. kejadian sedih pada pagi tersebut telah mengorbankan kesemua anak kapal dan penumpang di dalamnya. tiada seorang pun yang selamat semasa kejadian. suatu sejarah hitam yang paling pahit untuk dikenang selama-lamanya di dalam sejarah penerbangan di pakistan, dan dunia amnya. aku juga terkesan dengan kejadian ini kerana ianya berlaku di depan mata dan aku masih boleh terngiang-ngiang lagi bunyi pesawat penumpang itu terbang di atas pejabatku sebelum merempuh bukit margalla.

beberapa pekerja ku yang berada di atas bumbung pejabat juga menceritakan yang mereka nampak pesawat penumpang airblue melintasi ruang udara pejabat. dengan landing gear masih terpasang. pekerjaku boleh melihat penumpang melalui tingkap pesawat. anda pasti boleh bayangkan betapa rendahnya pesawat tersebut terbang pada pagi tersebut. selepas hilang daripada pandangan, pesawat tersebut terus membelah kabus tebas dan seterusnya merempuhi bukit margalla.

hanya tuhan sahaja yang tahu betapa peritnya mangsa-mangsa kejadian ketika itu. bagi aku, tak dapat aku bayangkan sekiranya tubuhku yang berada di dalam pesawat malang tersebut. aku yakin penumpang di dalam pesawat airblue tersebut pasti dapat melihat dengan jelas masjid faisal, masjid terbesar di pakistan di sebelah kiri mereka. dan bagi yang familiar dengan bandar islamabad, pastilah tahu yang di depan mereka adalah bukit margalla. alhamdulillah aku masih selamat di bumi asing pakistan sehinggalah pada masa catatan ini diposkan.

pekerjaan ku di bumi islamabad ini memerlukan aku untuk menaiki pesawat samada domestik mahupun antarabangsa di sini. mana mungkin aku akan melalui jalan darat sepanjang masa. this land is too big to travel by land. mahu tidak mahu aku terpaksa juga menaiki pesawat. samada mahu ke karachi atau lahore. mahupun mahu pulang ke malaysia. hanya doa sahaja yang boleh dipanjatkan tatkala berada di dalam mana-mana pesawat semasa landing dan take-off. itu sahaja yang termampu dilakukan. yang lainnya kita akan berserah kepada yang maha kuasa menentukannya.

setiap kali berada di lapangan terbang di sini, tidak kiralah di mana hatta di islamabad, karachi mahupun lahore, aku pasti akan memandang keadaan sekeliling. airport di sini bukan airport biasa. kawalan keselamatan agak ketat di sini. airport adalah benteng terakhir. jika berlaku apa-apa di airport, musnahlah harapan untuk keluar dari bumi pakistan ini. perasaan memang bercampur baur setiap kali menaiki pesawat domestik di sini. malah untuk pengetahuan anda, aku sepatutnya menaiki pesawat PIA ke karachi pada pagi rabu malang tersebut. kebiasaannya aku akan ke karachi pada penerbangan PIA jam 2 petang. aku pasti kalau aku ditakdirkan ke karachi, semasa kejadian aku akan berada di boarding area menunggu pengumuman untuk menaiki pesawat. pasti suasana kalut di lapangan terbang lagi merungsingkan jiwa tatkala mendengar berita cemas, sedih dah hiba seperti ini.

namun alhamdulillah, nyawa masih panjang. aku masih di sini. aku telah batalkan niat untuk ke karachi pada rabu lepas kerana belum bersedia untuk discussion di karachi dengan sebuah syarikat multinasional di sana.

banyak sebenarnya persoalan yang tidak terjawab sehingga ke hari ini

mengapa pesawat malang itu terbang dengan rendah sekali ? kawasan pejabat aku dan rumah adalah kawasan red zone dan no-fly zone. mana mungkin pesawat komersil menerjah awan di atas kami. kebiasaannya memang terdengat pesawat dan helikopter di atas rumah dan pejabat, namu biasanya ianya ialah pesawat tentera sahaja. namun ianya telah berlaku. dan berlaku di depan mataku sendiri.

The newspaper claimed that the pilots were warned that they were flying away from the runway, to which the pilot responded “I can see the runway”.^[13] The controller then told the flight crew to “immediately turn left, Margalla [Hills] are ahead”, before the pilot again replied “we can see it”.^[13] An airline official stated that the pilots did not send any emergency signals prior to the crash.^[14] Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik stated that the plane was at 2,600 feet as it approached Islamabad but went back up to 3,000 feet before eventually crashing.^[15]

setiap kali pesawat thai airways landing di lapangan terbang islamabad, aku akan melihat dengan tekun di tingkap pesawat. dek kerana dah banyak kali landing dan take-off di sana, aku boleh mengecam kesemua objek di mukabumi. kejadian pesawat airblue ini pasti akan memberi kesan kepada kami di sini. things will never be the same again after this. fobia pasti akan terasa dan sedikit takut, tidak seperti sebelumnya. namun apakan daya, hidup mesti diteruskan jua.

kini telah tiga hari kejadian tragedi malang ini berlaku. setiap kali aku membuka tirai di belakang kerusi dan melihat bukit margalla, pasti aku akan terkenang akan peristiwa tersebut. ianya boleh berlaku kepada sesiapapun. kesan hitam terbakar masih lagi kelihatan di margalla hills di sana.tragedi hitam ini akan dikenang sampai bila-bila. setiap kali aku ke pir sohawa untuk menikmati juadah di restoran monal mahupun bersiar-siar di daman-e koh menikmati pemandangan bumi islamabad, pasti aku akan terkenang akan tragedi pagi rabu hujan renyai-renyai ini.

catatan ini akan berguna untuk generasi masa hadapan dan sebagai kenangan aku di bumi islamabad.

ISLAMABAD: A passenger plane crashed in the Margalla Hills in Islamabad on Wednesday, reports said.

At least 152 people were on board the ABQ-202, said Pervez George, a civil aviation official.

The 152 included 146 passengers along with six crew members, George said.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene and managed to pull out four injured passengers from under the rubble.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said five injured people were recovered from the site and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Imtiaz Inayat, a senior Islamabad municipal official, told a private television channel up to five bodies had been recovered from the site of the crash.

“Several bodies are lying in the area. Four or five bodies have been taken,” Inayat said.

Separately, Imtiaz Elahi, chairman of the Capital Development Authority, said: We have sent fire engines to the site, so far five dead bodies have been recovered.

“We are gathering information. We have no more details,” said Mubarik Shah, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority.

The plane was flying from Karachi to Islamabad and the exact cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

The aircraft had lost contact with the control tower during the crash which occurred amid thick fog and heavy rainfall in Islamabad.

Guards with the forestry service said they had found some wreckage and seen some bodies, police official Mohammad Saeed said. The army said it was sending special troops to the area to help out along with helicopters.

Mohammed Usman, an official at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport said dozens of relatives of passengers gathered there were crying and desperate to get information about their loved ones.

One Saqlain Altaf told a private television news channel that he was on a family outing in the hills when he saw the plane, looking unsteady in the air.

”The plane had lost balance, and then we saw it going down,” he said, adding he heard the crash.

Thick clouds of smoke were rising from the Margalla Hills.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani ordered authorities to control the fire immediately and rescue passengers.

Airblue could not immediately be reached for comment.

The airliner began operations in 2004 with a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, the company said on its website.

The plane that crashed on Wednesday was also built by Airbus, the European planemaker said.

“We regret to confirm there has been an accident with an Airbus aircraft and we will provide more information when we have more confirmed data available,” Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath said.

According to the latest available data published by Airbus, Airblue operates six aircraft from its A320 family of short-haul and medium-haul aircraft seating up to 185 passengers.

Forty-five people were killed when a passenger plane belonging to Pakistan International Airlines crashed near Multan in 2006.

Passenger Plane Crashes Near Pakistani Capital

There was no immediate information on survivors.

The plane was operated by Airblue and was arriving from Karachi, according to The Associated Press.

Television footage showed clouds of smoke rising from the heavy forests of the Margalla Hills near Islamabad, where the plane was believed to have crashed. Helicopters were flying above what appeared to be a crash site as rescue crews arrived. Flames were visible from the area but it was not clear whether they were from the wreckage of the aircraft or trees that caught fire as the plane went down. The Margalla Hills are just north of Islamabad.

Grief-stricken relatives of survivors were seen gathered at Islamabad’s airport awaiting word on survivors.

The plane was an Airbus A321 and was carrying 146 passengers and six crew members, Pervez George, a local civil aviation official, told Dawn television. Mr. George was quoted by Dawn as saying the plane lost contact with the control tower in Islamabad and crashed amid thick fog and heavy rainfall in Islamabad.

NDTV, an Indian television broadcaster, reported from Islamabad that a woman saw the plane pass over her house just before the crash. The plane disappeared and she heard a loud explosion, she said.

“I don’t think they could see where they were going,” she said. “It went over my house. You could actually see that it was flying very low.”

The immediate focus would be on finding survivors, but an investigation would be launched, Airblue spokesman Raheel Ahmed told The Associated Press.

Airblue offers flights within Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, as well as to Oman, Muscat and Manchester in Great Britain.

Pakistan jet with 152 on board crashes; few survivors

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – A commercial Pakistani passenger plane with 152 people on board crashed in bad weather in hills near Islamabad on Wednesday, and officials said there were so far no survivors.

At least 20 people were confirmed dead when the Airbus 321, belonging to private airline Airblue, crashed in heavy rain while flying from the southern port city of Karachi. Rescue efforts are continuing, officials said.

“So far, we have not found any survivors,” Imtiaz Elahi, chairman of the state-run Capital Development Authority, a city municipal body, told Reuters.

He said earlier reports that five survivors had been pulled from the wreckage were wrong.

Rescuers said they had to dig through the rubble with their bare hands, with fire and thick smoke hampering their work. The crash site, on a steep and heavily wooded hill, has no roads, limiting access to pedestrians and helicopters.

“You find very few intact bodies. Basically, we are collecting bodies parts and putting them in bags,” Bin Yameen, senior officer in the Islamabad police, told Reuters from the scene of the crash.

“I don’t know what exact death toll but one can imagine how many could survive in such a bad situation.

“Bodies are being lifted through helicopters.”

The plane lost contact with the control room of the Islamabad International Airport at 0443 GMT. It was carrying 146 passengers and six crew members.

A thick blanket of cloud and smoke caused by fire could be seen rising from the crash site. A helicopter hovered overhead and flames licked at trees and what appeared to be wreckage from the plane, television pictures showed.

“We are removing wreckage with our hands. There is fire. There’s smoke, which has made the rescue job very difficult,” Bin Yameen said.

The crash site is on the Margalla Hills facing Islamabad, about 300 meters (yards) up the side of the hills. Smoke was visible from some districts of the city, and crowds of onlookers lined the streets pointing and watching the smoke rise from the green hills.

“It was raining. I saw the plane flying very low from the window of my office,” witness Khadim Hussain said.

Pakistan’s AAJ television showed rescue workers making their way on foot to the crash site with some difficulty. A young man was weeping and being embraced by another man.

The military said it had sent three helicopters to the site and troops had also been moved there.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani ordered authorities to control the fire immediately and rescue passengers.

Officials at the British and U.S. embassies in Islamabad said they were trying to confirm if any of their nationals had been onboard the crashed plane.

Airblue began operations in 2004 with a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, according to its website www.airblue.com.

Spokesman Raheel Ahmed said this was the first crash for the airline and that an investigation was being launched.

“It’s too early to speculate,” he said about the cause of the crash. “The civil aviation authorities will also be involved.”

Airbus confirmed one of its planes was involved in the Airblue crash.

“We regret to confirm there has been an accident with an Airbus aircraft and we will provide more information when we have more confirmed data available,” said Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath.

At Islamabad’s international airport, passengers in the departure lounge scanned the television screens for news.

“I’m not surprised something like this has happened,” said Ahmed Fairuz, a passenger awaiting departure. “The weather is just too bad for flying.”

Aviation industry sources in Europe said the aircraft was leased from International Lease Finance Corp, the leasing unit of U.S. insurance giant AIG

Los Angeles-based ILFC was not available for comment and there was no immediate confirmation of these details.

The A321 is the largest of the A320 family of single-aisle jets produced by EADS subsidiary Airbus. This particular type of aircraft, which can seat up to 185 passengers, has been in service since 1994.

Forty-five people were killed when a passenger plane belonging to Pakistan International Airlines crashed near the central city of Multan in 2006.

LAHORE: Terrorists added another bloody chapter to the violence-riddled recent history of Lahore when they struck two worship places of the Ahmadiya community in the city on Friday, leaving 74 people dead and more than 113 injured.

According to some TV channels, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (Punjab chapter) has claimed responsibility for the attacks. This was the worst attack on Ahmadia community todate. The dead included Lahore Amir of the Jamaat Ahmadiya and former accountability judge Munir Sheikh, his deputy Naseer Ahmed, a retired lieutenant general said to be in his 90s who was also the chief of the Jamaat for the Model Town area, Anwer Shad, Imam of Bait-ul-Noor, Chaudhry Hafeez, a lawyer, and Wapda’s deputy director Lal Khan.

In almost simultaneous attacks, terrorists struck the worship places in Garhi Shahu and Model Town where a large number of people of the community had gathered for Friday congregations.

SSP Investigations Zulfiqar Hameed told Dawn that 74 people had been killed and 113 injured in the twin attacks, adding that 24 bodies of the Model Town attack were brought to Jinnah Hospital and 50 bodies of the Garihi Sahu strike to Mayo Hospital.

At least 50 people were killed in Darul Zikr in Garhi Shahu which, according to the police, was attacked by three terrorists at around 1:35pm. More than a thousand people were said to be inside the worship place at the time of the attack.

Armed with AK-47 rifles, shotguns, grenades, wearing suicide jackets and firing automatic weapons indiscriminately, the terrorists occupied the worship place for several hours, frustrating several police attempts to enter the building, delaying rescue work and holding hundreds of people hostage.

Later, they blew themselves up when challenged by police.

The attackers entered the worship place by killing the guard at the gate and then opened indiscriminate fire in the hall where a large number of worshippers were present.

Police took control of the place at around 5pm after an operation which involved commandos of the elite police force. Only then rescue workers were able to take the injured to hospitals and retrieve the bodies.

A technician of City-42 TV channel was also killed while covering the incident. At least 74 people, nine of them policemen, were injured in the attack.

Police said that two terrorists were involved in the Model Town attack in which, according to government figures, 22 people were killed and more than 40 injured. The two assailants in Model Town first blew up a bomb-rigged motorcycle parked outside the place of worship.

Members of the Jamaat Ahmadiya told Dawn that worshippers in their thousands were gathered at the place, Bait-ul-Noor, at the time of the terror strike.

One of the attackers tried to explode his suicide vest, but couldn’t properly detonate it and was arrested in injured condition. He was identified as Amir Muavia.

Witnesses said that another suicide bomber was overpowered by worshippers when he tried to set off the bomb strapped to his body. According to police and Punjab government sources, his name was Abdullah and he was in his teens. Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told media that the young boy belonged to Rahim Yar Khan and attended a madressah in Karachi.

In contrast to the official word on the number of attackers, it is feared that the terrorists who carried out the Model Town attack did have some other accomplices, who might have escaped after the attack.

This theory got strengthened when the crew of a TV channel reported that a man coming out of the Bait-ul-Noor after the attack had fired at them before fleeing from the scene.

The Mayo Hospital received most of the casualties from Garhi Shahu while most of those hit by the strike in Model Town were taken to Jinnah Hospital. Several injured people and some bodies were taken to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, General Hospital, Services Hospital and Ganga Ram Hospital.

Police recovered severed heads of three suicide bombers in Garhi Shahu, but their identity was yet to be established.

Talking to the media after personnel of law-enforcement agencies had cleared the two buildings on Friday evening, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised effort of police in overpowering the attackers. He, however, ordered an immediate inquiry into allegations that police didn’t react fast to minimise casualties.

Many of those who were present at the site of the two attacks said they were horrified by the incident and protested against the lack of proper security arrangements which made it that much easier for terrorists to target innocent people. A witness to the Model Town strike told Dawn the Ahmadiya community feared violence against it in the wake of threats made to its members.

The statement was corroborated by Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. In its reaction to Friday’s target-killing, HRCP chairperson Asma Jahangir said her organisation was aware of the presence of the threat and had conveyed its concerns to the Punjab government a year ago.

LAHORE: Gunmen attacked worshippers from the Ahmadi community in two worship places of Lahore on Friday, taking hostages and killing at least 70 people, officials said.

The gunmen opened fire shortly after Friday prayers and threw what could have been grenades at two Ahmadi worship places in residential neighbourhoods in Pakistan’s cultural capital.

Sajjad Bhutta, deputy commissioner of Lahore, said at least 70 people had been killed in the twin attacks on worship places in Garhi Shahu and Model Town. A total of 78 were injured.

The death toll at Garhi Shahu was higher, Bhutta said, because three attackers blew themselves up with suicide vests packed with explosives when police tried to enter the building.

Police are still searching the area as two attackers were still at large.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the attacks, expressing “deep sorrow and grief over the loss of precious lives”.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the incidents would generate greater resolve to combat extremism.

“It’s a reminder to the nation that Pakistan will achieve its destiny only after we get rid of the worst type of extremism and fundamentalism,” he told a news conference. “The entire nation will fight this evil.”

He said one attacker had been arrested. Police in Model Town confirmed one gunmen had been arrested and another killed.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion quickly fell on the Pakistani Taliban.

“It’s too early to say who is behind these attacks,” said a Lahore-based security official. “But my guess is that like most other attacks, there would be some link to the Taliban or their associated militants.”

Punjab’s Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the arrested attacker was a teenage Pashtun. This, he said, indicated a link to the tribal area of Waziristan and strongly hinted at a Taliban link.

“The prayer leader was giving a sermon when we heard firing and blasts. Everybody stood up and then two gunmen barged into the place of worship and sprayed bullets,” Fateh Sharif, a 19-year-old student, told Reuters from Model Town.

“They had long beards. They were carrying rucksacks.” Bhutta said a suicide vest laden with explosives was recovered from the Model Town worship place, where some attackers escaped. One fired at a television van before the area was made safe.

“He was young, clean-shaven. He sprayed bullets at our van while fleeing the scene,” Rabia Mehmood, a reporter told Reuters.

ATTACKS LAUNCHED AFTER PRAYERS

Witnesses said the assaults were launched shortly after prayers.

“I saw some gunmen run towards the Ahmadis’ place of worship and then I heard blasts and gunfire,” Mohammad Nawaz, a resident, told Reuters.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said it had warned of threats against the Ahmadi community centre in Lahore for more than a year and demanded “foolproof security and protection” from the government.

It expressed concern over “the increasing sectarian dimension” of militancy in Pakistan, which it called “a big security threat to the entire society”.

Friday’s shootings were the worst attacks in Pakistan since March 12 suicide attacks seconds apart killed 57 people in Lahore while targeting the Pakistani military.

Nine attacks have now killed more than 220 people in Lahore over the past year, a historical city, playground for the elite and home to many top brass in Pakistan military and intelligence establishment.

The United States on Friday also condemned the deadly attack in Lahore. “We condemn this brutal violence against innocent people. We also condemn the targeting and violence against any religious group, in this case the Ahmadi community,” State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters. —Agencies

LAHORE: Four people were killed in a blast in a fireworks factory near Lahore’s Bedian area on Friday, rescue officials told DawnNews.

At least seven others were injured, rescue officials said.

Rescue officials arrived at the site of the blast and shifted the wounded to a hospital.

QUETTA: Unidentified gunmen Friday killed four policemen in southwest Pakistan, where targeted killings blamed on insurgents and Taliban militants are increasing, police said.

The attack took place in Satellite Town, a neighbourhood of Quetta, the capital of resource-rich Balochistan province, police said.

“A police station house officer, two constables and the driver were killed on the spot. The attackers fled on their motorcycle,” local police official Mohammmad Amin told AFP by telephone.

Violence has recently surged in Balochistan which borders both Afghanistan and Iran. About two dozen people died in targeted killings in March.

The province is rife with Islamist militancy, sectarian violence between majority Sunnis and minority Shia Muslims and regional insurgency.

Baloch militants rose up in 2004 demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the region’s wealth of natural resources, including oil and gas. Hundreds of people have died since then.

PESHAWAR: Security forces battled Taliban militants in the Orakzai region near the Afghan border in the northwest.

About 40 militants were killed and 30 wounded in attacks by government aircraft in three places, a paramilitary force officer said.

There was no independent confirmation of the toll. Militants often dispute government accounts.

PESHAWAR: At least 23 people, including a deputy superintendent of police and leaders and activists of Jamaat-i-Islami, were killed and 42 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a protest demonstration of the party in the city’s historical Qissa Khwani Bazaar on Monday evening.

Earlier in the day, a time-device exploded outside the main gate of Police Public School on Jamrud Road in the busy Board Bazaar, killing a five-year-old student and injuring seven others.

Jamaat’s district naib amir Haji Dost Mohammad Khan, DSP Gulfat Hussain and two constables were among the dead. The party’s provincial general-secretary Shabir Ahmad Khan and district amir Sabir Hussain Awan were injured in the suicide attack.

“The explosion took place soon after Haji Dost Mohammad had offered the concluding prayers at the end of the demonstration against loadshedding and leaders were shaking hands to see off each other,” said Mohammad Shahid, a Jamaat worker.

Rehmatullah Khan, another JI worker who lost his brother Haji Samiuddin in the attack, said that protesters were about to disperse when the blast took place.

Eyewitnesses said the place was littered with human flesh and blood and broken glasses and items of damaged shops strewn all over the place. There were groaning and cries of the injured and wailing of hospital ambulances.

The blast damaged several vehicles and nearby shops. Security forces cordoned off the Qissa Khwani Bazaar and closed link roads.

“We have found the head of the suspected suicide bomber,” said Shafqat Malik, in-charge of the bomb disposal unit. He said he believed the bomber was carrying about 7kg of explosives mixed with ball bearings in his suicide vest.

City police chief Liaqat Ali said the DSP was the bomber’s prime target. After the rally ended, the DSP was about to board his van when the bomber approached him. “The body of the DSP was in a bad shape which showed that he was the target.”

But City Circle SP Imran Kishwar told Dawn that it was a suicide attack carried out by a teenager and the apparent target was the gathering.

A security official said that a suspected suicide bomber who had been arrested three days ago informed investigators that seven of his associates from the Orakzai Agency had been assigned the task of launching attacks in different areas.

The bodies and the injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. Some of the injured JI leaders were later shifted to the party’s Al-Khidmat Hospital.

The LRH chief executive said that 23 bodies and 42 injured had been brought to the hospital. Six of them were in serious condition.

An official of the Khan Raziq police station said that three constables, Imdad Ali, Mohtamim Khan and Zahid, had suffered injuries. Zahid later succumbed to his wounds.

The JUI-F said that three of the injured were its workers. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman condemned the attack.

Jamaat-i-Islami Naib Amir and former provincial minister Sirajul Haq told reporters in the hospital that the government had failed to protect the lives and property of people. “Rulers have no right to remain in power and they should step down immediately,” he said, adding that his party would soon devise its future course of action.

Former JI provincial minister Hafiz Hashmat accused the American agency Blackwater of carrying out the attack.

School Blast

Town police DSP Haroon-ur-Rasheed Babar told reporters that the bomb had been planted inside an empty shop on the Jamrud Road. It was detonated at a time when students of junior classes had left the Police Public School and the rest were coming out at about 1.15pm.

He said the device might have been detonated by a cellular phone.

However, an official of the bomb disposal unit said it was a time bomb and was probably put in a school bag or shopping bag because parts of bags had been found at the scene. The explosives, he said, weighed about two to three kilograms.

The blast left a crater, destroyed two motorcars and two shops.

The injured were taken to the Khyber Teaching Hospital. According to a hospital source, five-year-old student Taimur was killed on the spot. The injured students were identified as Aftab, Akhtar Hassan, Muddasir, Fahad, Shakirullah, Junaid, Hassan Raza and Lala Gul.

Police and security personnel cordoned off the area and closed the busy road for traffic.

NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti condemned the blast and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

PESHAWAR: A bomb attack in a restive tribal area on Monday destroyed two tankers carrying fuel for Nato forces in Afghanistan, local officials said.

The bomb planted under one tanker exploded near the village of Takhtabeg in the lawless Khyber tribal district, turning the vehicle into a huge ball of flames, administration official Rehan Gul Khattak said.

Six people were injured, reports AFP.

The second tanker and a goods truck passing by also caught fire and the blaze spread to a petrol pump and timber stores on the roadside, he added.

The tankers were carrying fuel for Nato forces in Afghanistan, Khyber administration chief Shafeerullah Wazir told AFP.

Khyber is on the main Nato land and supply route through Pakistan into Afghanistan, where more than 121,000 foreign forces are battling to reverse an escalating Taliban insurgency, now into its ninth year.

According to DawnNews, TTP has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Nato supply line.

PESHAWAR: Two suicide bombers dressed in burqas struck a crowd of displaced people collecting aid handouts, killing at least 41 and wounding more than 60 on Saturday at a camp in Kohat.

The bombers struck minutes apart in the Kacha Pukha camp on the outskirts of the garrison city of Kohat, a registration centre for people fleeing Taliban violence and Pakistani army operations close to the Afghan border.

“We have 41 dead in the twin suicide bombing. There are 64 injured,” local police chief Dilawar Khan Bangash told AFP by telephone.

He said the bombers walked into the crowd wearing burqas, the loose-fitting head-to-toe outfit that obscures the face and worn by conservative Muslim women in parts of northwest Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Body parts of the bombers were recovered and most of the victims were members of the Mani Khel and Baramad Khel tribes who had gathered for registration after fleeing fighting in their home district of Orakzai, he said.

Bangash said the first bomber detonated his explosives while displaced people gathered to register and receive relief items.

A few minutes later the second bomber blew himself up in the middle of the gathering crowd.

Khalid Omarzai, the local chief of administration, also said 41 people died, including Azmat Ali Bangash, a journalist working for local TV channel Samaa.

Akhtar Jan, 35, a taxi driver, said he heard a huge blast soon after dropping passengers at the camp.

“I rushed to the blast site and put a wounded man into my cab. And when I went to bring another blast victim I heard another blast,” he told AFP by telephone from his hospital bed.

“I fell unconscious and don’t know how I was brought here,” said Jan, who received injuries to his head and abdomen.

At least 210,000 people have been displaced from the tribal districts of Orakzai and Kurram, most of whom have registered in Kohat and Hangu towns.—AFP

ISLAMABAD: Police in Pakistan have deployed two giant bomb detectors on roads into Islamabad in their latest efforts to stop suicide truck bombers striking the capital.

This is the first time Pakistani authorities have used the Chinese-built devices to protect a city since Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked groups went on a bombing campaign, killing more than 3,200 people in nearly three years.

Looking for a bomb in a country with a population of 167 million and an under-equipped police force can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Checkpoints have mushroomed over the last year in the capital, where a suicide truck bomb demolished part of the five-star Marriott Hotel in September 2008 killing 60 people, and there are frequent alerts about possible attacks.

Police say 1,000 officers are manning more than 90 checkpoints at entry points, along main roads, outside sensitive targets and in residential areas.

But now they hail huge scanners bought from China for nearly three million dollars on a soft loan – a further sign of growing economic and security cooperation with Beijing.

The scanners resemble giant airport security arches, mounted on wheels so they can pass back and forth over stationary vehicles.

On a dusty road outside the capital, the pale grey arch of one scanner, standing more than 4.5 metres (15 feet) high, checked a brightly painted truck.

Inside the control booth, Muhammad Afzal, the officer in charge, kept a close eye on a bank of computers analysing the image.

“The scanners have a 100-per cent accuracy rate,” he told AFP.

“We detected 20,000 bullets in a private vehicle yesterday,” he added.

It turned out the ammunition belonged to the paramilitary and was being legally transported.

Trucks coming off the motorway from Peshawar, capital of the northwest and gateway to the lawless tribal belt seen as the fountain of Taliban and Al-Qaeda militancy in Pakistan, can now pass through the scanner.

Vehicles are also scanned as they come from Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, where the southern rural belt has been increasingly linked to militant attacks and which is seen as a recruiting ground for the Taliban.

Current capacity is 30 to 35 trucks per day per scanner – a drop in the ocean of 250,000 cars and 3,000 trucks that stream into Islamabad each day, according to traffic police.

Only large trucks picked out by monitoring police officers are checked by the devices.

Even so, tempers are fraying among truckers who consider the whole thing a waste of time and money which causes tailbacks on the approach from Peshawar.

“It may be beneficial for some people but it’s nothing but a waste of time for us. We have to wait for hours in long queues to pass through the scanning process,” said truck driver Fazal Karim.

Karim, who supplies bricks to construction companies in Islamabad, claimed he was losing at least 1,500 rupees (15 dollars) per day.

Farkhand Iqbal, project director of the National Police Bureau, told AFP that Pakistan acquired the scanners for 2.96 million dollars on a soft loan payable over 25 years.

At the moment, Pakistani officials acknowledge they still need more time before they are able to operate the machines with ease and confidence.

Chinese experts are due in the capital to give more training to a team of at least 10 Pakistani scanner operators.

China says it wants to boost trade with Pakistan in coming years.

ISLAMABAD: An explosion took place in a garbage dump outside the American School in sector H-8/4 in Islamabad on Tuesday. The overseas Pakistani Foundation College is also located nearby.

A wave of panic spread soon after the explosion occurred. Police and the law enforcers immediately reached the spot and cordoned the area. The police cleared the area after collecting the evidence.

However, investigations are still underway to track those who planted the bomb. No casualties were reported.

ISLAMABAD – A mysterious explosion occurred on Wednesday at Jinnah Super Market, however no casualty was reported.

Experts said the blast had resemblance with those which occurred a few weeks back in Lahore. However, Islamabad Police didn’t confirm the nature of the blast and said that it was a cylinder blast. However after some minutes, they termed it a blast of a cracker used in a marriage ceremony.

The blast took place at Jinnah Super Market’s parking lot in front of King’s Arcade Plaza. The sound of the blast was heard in a radius of many kilometres. The police also found shattered glass pieces and some damaged spare parts of a car, however no news of recovery of damaged car came to surface till filing of this report. The windowpanes of nearby building were smashed. The officials of bomb disposal squad reached the scene and cordoned off the area.

Talking to this correspondent, DIG Binyamin said, “Nature of blast is yet to be ascertained; it could be a Lahore-type blast that took place in Allama Iqbal Town in recent past and it could be that of a cracker mostly used in marriage ceremonies.”
Another senior police officer wishing not to be named said that it was sound bomb that was hurled at parking lot by unidentified persons to create fear and panic among the people.

Interior Ministry Rehman Malik visited the blast site. Talking to media persons he said that it was a firecracker. However he said that it could be an attempt to create panic and fear among the people. He also ordered an inquiry to ascertain the facts.

Police official Munawar Alam says authorities are investigating the source of the blast. He says nobody has been killed or wounded by the explosion.

WASHINGTON: The United States on Monday condemned an attack on the US consulate in Peshawar and expressed “great concern” after militants targeted the building in the provincial capital.

“We strongly condemn the violence,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The United States said at least two Pakistani security guards employed by the consulate were killed and a number of others seriously wounded.

The attacks in quick succession were among the deadliest so far this year in the country.

Gibbs said Monday that the attacks had only succeeded in killing Pakistanis, something which in the past had merely served to strengthen Islamabad’s determination to battle the militants.— AFP

PESHAWAR: A bomb attack killed 30 people at a celebration organised by a political party in northwest Pakistan on Monday, with fears the death toll could rise further, police said.

The suspected suicide bomber attacked the open-air gathering in Timargarah, the main town in the district of Lower Dir, where Pakistan waged a major offensive against local Taliban insurgents last year.

“Twenty-five people were killed,” Qazi Jamil, police chief for the northwestern region of Malakand, told AFP. However, DawnNews reported that at least 30 people were killed in the blast.

“Evidence collected so far indicates it was a suicide attack. We are investigating.”

“We are investigating whether it was a suicide attack or a bomb planted in the area. Residents said the blast occurred near the stage,” he added.

The Awami National Party (ANP), the secular political party that dominates government in North West Frontier Province organised the meeting to celebrate plans to re-name the province Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The new name honours the Pashtun-majority population in the province and is set to replace a name that dates back to British colonial rule.

“Our party had arranged a thanksgiving day to celebrate the changing of the name after 200 years of colonial legacy,” an ANP spokesman told Geo television.

“People are saying it was a suicide attack. Many people have been martyred, many more have been wounded,” he added, speaking from the main northwestern city of Peshawar.

Rescue workers were searching the site of the blast as people were feared to be trapped under the rubble. The dead and the injured have been shifted to GHQ hospital.

PESHAWAR/TIMERGARA: Grenade and suicide attacks on the US Consulate in Peshawar and on a rally of the Awami National Party in Timergara killed 51 people and injured over 120 others on Monday.

Government and security officials said a squad of at least five suicide bombers armed with rocket-propelled grenades, guns and car bombs struck the outer security parameter of the heavily-guarded US Consulate from the main T-junction connecting the city with the cantonment and the highway to Afghanistan.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

“It was a well-coordinated and well-planned attack,” a senior intelligence official told Dawn.

The suicide bombers came in a double-cabin pick-up, two intelligence and a senior government officials said. The first bomber walked towards the outer security post and fired from his automatic assault rifle. He later blew himself up near an armoured personnel carrier.

They said that three other bombers followed closely in tow and one of them fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the APC. The RPG exploded with a big bang but missed the target.

“The attackers used Russian-made RPG-7. It is the most effective anti-tank explosive device. Had it hit the APC, it would have dug a hole in it,” a senior official of the Bomb Disposal Squad said.

The officials said that it was not clear whether security guards deployed inside and outside the US Consulate engaged the attackers. But as the three bombers moved forward, the vehicle carrying them exploded, setting off a huge plume of smoke into the sky.

The security officials said they believed that the three bombers had died because of the explosion near the checkpost.

An intelligence official said the forensic evidence suggested that a suicide bomber inside the vehicle had set off the bomb prematurely which killed his three associates. Two of the bombers still had live suicide jackets on them and BDS personnel later untangled wires and prima-cords and defused the bombs.

“Their bodies were badly burnt and beyond recognition. They couldn’t get the time to pull the cords,” the official said.

The explosion left a seven-feet-long and four-feet-wide crater, Sahfqat Malik, head of the DBS, told Dawn. He said that high-quality TNT explosives used in the attack weighed 80-100kg. He said the suicide jackets bore the tell-tale signs of TTP’s involvement, particularly its outfit in the Orakzai tribal region.

The dead included one police constable and two security guards of the Frontier Constabulary. Most of the people killed or wounded were civilians.

No-one inside the consulate was hurt and there was no major damage to the consulate building. The explosions smashed wind-shields of several cars parked inside the consulate.

The three, relatively smaller blasts, were triggered by BDS personnel in order to defuse the explosives, an official said.

He said that an intelligence agency had forewarned the US Consulate of a possible attack. It was not clear whether the consulate had heeded the warning and taken extra security measures, but officials said that senior US diplomats were not in the office at the time of attack.

TTP spokesman Azam Tariq called reporters in Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, and said the attack was a reaction to military operations and drone attacks in the tribal region. “We will continue attacks on the Americans in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he added.

ANP Rally

Forty-five people were killed and over 100 others injured when a suicide bomber set off explosives strapped to his body at a rally organised by the ANP to celebrate the renaming of NWFP in Timergara, about 170km from Peshawar.

According to eyewitnesses, the bomber in his early 20s blew himself up when a constable tried to stop him from proceeding to the centre-stage of the function.

ANP’s Lower Dir president Haji Bahadar Khan was delivering his speech at the ‘Jashn-i-Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’ rally when the blast took place. Over 500 ANP leaders and activists were attending the celebration.

A journalist and seven policemen were among the injured. They were taken to the DHQ Hospital in Timergara. Thirty-seven critically injured people were later airlifted to Peshawar.

The blast caused panic and fear and security forces cordoned off the area.

People killed in the blast were identified as Mohammad Yunas, Sher Zamin Khan, Azizur Rehman, Ilyas, Sher Rahim, Hayat Mohammad, Ibrar Ahmad, Fazal Rabi, Mohammad Riaz, Rahim Shah, Saeedullah, Sarfaraz, Mehmood Jan, Mohammad Riaz, Bahadar Khan, Nawab Khan, Nisar, Sultan Zeb, Mohammad, Qaisar, Akbar, Ihsanullah, Sarwar Khan, Zahid, Fateh Noor, Salim, Waheed Gul, Farman, Abdul Wahid, Niaz Mohammad, Khan Wali, Hanif, Samiur Rahman, Nazir Khan, Mian Rahim, Abdul Mateen, Mohammad Roz Khan, Mohammad Ali, Iftikhar, Abdullah, Asad Badshah, Noor Ali Shah, Mohammad Khan, Muhtaram Zeb and police constable Rahimul Haq.

Two legs believed to be of the bomber were brought to the hospital.

Karimullah, one of the speakers at the function, told Dawn that Haji Bahadar Khan was delivering his speech when the police constable shouted to warn people about the presence of the suicide bomber. He said that party leaders remained unhurt, but a number of workers had been killed.

The district and hospital administration declared an emergency and sealed all routes leading to the Timergara hospital.

Malakand region DIG Qazi Jamil, Dir Lower DCO Ghulam Mohammad, DPO Mumtaz Zarin and Dir Scouts’ officers visited the hospital.

The DIG told Dawn that the back of militants had been broken and they were now targeting innocent people at public gatherings.

DHQ hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Muhammad Wakil told Dawn that 36 bodies had been brought to the hospital and the number of the injured was over 80.

The injured ANP workers criticised what they called negligence of police and security personnel deployed at the function and termed the incident a security lapse.

A handful of militants are reported to be still active in violence-ravaged Maidan. They blew up two government schools in the area last week.

AFP adds: Police said two car bombs exploded — one at a checkpoint in Peshawar, about 50 metres from the US Consulate, and the other laden with about 100kg of explosives close to the consulate gate, followed by an exchange of fire.

The security barrier near the consulate gate was damaged, and shells from rocket-propelled grenades and hand-grenades were left lying in the area, which was sealed off by police and army, witnesses said.

Although the precise number of assailants was unclear, senior NWFP minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour said two attackers fled during the crossfire.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have appealed to the people to join the government in observing the Earth Hour by voluntarily switching off lights in their homes from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday.

In a message on Friday, Mr Zardari said conservation of natural resources was crucial to creating a sustainable environment.

He urged the people to use resources like electricity wisely “for the good of a maximum number of people”.

In his statement Mr Gilani said the International Earth Hour 2010 afforded Pakistanis the opportunity to demonstrate that they were serious in making a difference to the planet’s environment.

The current electricity crisis underlined the country’s need for additional sources of energy, he said. “But we can also individually and collectively conserve energy by exercising control over our energy use patterns,” added Mr Gilani. —APP
